Asian Rice Bowls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I\u2019m in the mood for something filling but not heavy, tasty but healthy, I turn to rice bowls.\u00a0 They are the perfect gluten-free &amp; easy meal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1275\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1275\" style=\"width: 578px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1275\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-6-rice-bowl.png\" alt=\"Spicy pork rice bowl with fresh vegetables and sesame seeds\" width=\"578\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-6-rice-bowl.png 578w, https:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-6-rice-bowl-399x300.png 399w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1275\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spicy pork rice bowl with fresh vegetables and sesame seeds<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">What is an Asian Rice Bowl?<\/h3>\n<p>Rice bowls are basically meals in a bowl that are popular all over Asia. \u00a0Ingredients may vary from country to country, but the concept is pretty much the same.\u00a0 Take a large bowl, fill it with rice, and top it with fresh or sauteed vegetables, meat, egg, or tofu, fresh herbs, and a sauce to tie things together. \u00a0Nuts and seeds may also be sprinkled on top for flavor.<\/p>\n<p>In Korea, eggs and hot sauce may make an appearance. \u00a0In Japan, steak and broccoli with teriyaki sauce. \u00a0In Vietnam, fresh bean sprouts and mint with charbroiled pork and a fish sauce vinaigrette. \u00a0And so on.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., rice bowls have made their way onto menus as quick and healthy alternatives to fast food. And for those of us who eat gluten-free, they are a great item to add to our home kitchen menus.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Making Rice Bowls<\/h3>\n<p>Every time I make a rice bowl it is different. \u00a0What\u2019s the same is my process.<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0Make a pot of rice.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I use Calrose short-grain rice (you can usually find it at the grocery store near all of the other rice or in the Asian foods section)<\/li>\n<li>For 4 servings, use 1 \u00bd cups of Calrose rice and 2 cups of water.\u00a0 It will cook up sticky and dense.\u00a0 Make sure to stir the bottom occasionally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1273\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-3-rice-bowl.png\" alt=\"rice\" width=\"578\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-3-rice-bowl.png 578w, https:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-3-rice-bowl-399x300.png 399w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. \u00a0Cook up some meat, fish, tofu, eggs, or beans<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cut meats and tofu into bite-sized chunks; saute them with a little cooking oil, garlic, ginger<\/li>\n<li>For fish \u2013 leave whole; pan fry with a bit of oil only<\/li>\n<li>For beans \u2013 eat them whole and cooked (adzuki are great)<\/li>\n<li>For eggs \u2013 fry or scramble them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. \u00a0Decide on my vegetables and if I will use them fresh, steamed, or sauteed<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"has-sub\">Cut vegetables up\n<ul>\n<li>Great fresh veg: avocado, cucumber, carrot shreds, green onions, lettuce, bean sprouts<\/li>\n<li>Great steamer veg: broccoli, baby corn, snap peas<\/li>\n<li>Great saute veg: red peppers, broccoli slaw, cabbage, onions, bok choy<\/li>\n<li>Or anything else you want\/have. \u00a0In the photo below, I used cooked sweet potatoes and sauteed them with broccoli and pork.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Steam veg until just tender or saute them by adding them to the almost-cooked meat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1274\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-5-rice-bowl.png\" alt=\"9-22-11-5-rice-bowl\" width=\"578\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-5-rice-bowl.png 578w, https:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-5-rice-bowl-399x300.png 399w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. Add sauce to saute pan if cooking meat\/veg or mix vinaigrette for fresh veg<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For cooking, I use coconut aminos or\u00a0gluten-free Asian cooking sauces. \u00a0There are tamari soy and a variety of dressings and Asian cooking sauces that are amazing! \u00a0Orange juice is also good \u2013 especially with broccoli.<\/li>\n<li>For fresh, I use rice wine vinegar, lime juice, sriracha chile sauce, or a combination of these with a touch of sweetness (agave); hold the sauce until you are ready to put your bowl together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5. \u00a0Pull together any other toppings<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nuts and seeds: sesame seeds, peanuts, almond slivers<\/li>\n<li>Fresh herbs: mint, cilantro, basil especially for fresh veg dishes<\/li>\n<li>Spices: chili flakes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>6. \u00a0Layer ingredients in bowl<br \/>\nRice \u2192 Protein &amp; Vegetables \u2192 Toppings \u2192 Dressing for fresh bowl<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1272\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1272\" style=\"width: 578px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1272\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-2-rice-bowl.png\" alt=\"Teriyaki pork with steamed broccoli, sweet potatoes and onions\" width=\"578\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-2-rice-bowl.png 578w, https:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-22-11-2-rice-bowl-399x300.png 399w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Teriyaki pork with steamed broccoli, sweet potatoes and onions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I don\u2019t use recipes, per se.
