{"id":743,"date":"2011-11-17T09:17:45","date_gmt":"2011-11-17T16:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/realfoodchronicles.maoomba.com\/?p=743"},"modified":"2016-04-23T19:49:35","modified_gmt":"2016-04-24T01:49:35","slug":"fennel-for-the-everyday-joe-and-jane-soup-recipe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/fennel-for-the-everyday-joe-and-jane-soup-recipe\/","title":{"rendered":"Fennel for the Everyday Joe (and Jane) + Soup Recipe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fennel was on sale at the grocery store last week.\u00a0 I picked up a bulb, with all of its unruly fronds intact, and headed up to the front.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-780\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FennelTomatoSoupA-11182011.png\" alt=\"Fennel Bulb\" width=\"579\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FennelTomatoSoupA-11182011.png 579w, https:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FennelTomatoSoupA-11182011-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you use <em>that <\/em>for,\u201d asked the guy at the checkout counter.\u00a0 \u201cI see people buy it sometimes, but have no idea how I\u2019d use it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time my produce choices have been scrutinized.\u00a0 And, frankly, I don\u2019t blame the people who pepper me with questions for doing so.<\/p>\n<p>I do the same thing when I go to an ethnic grocery store or when I travel and see foods I\u2019ve never encountered before:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is this?<\/li>\n<li>What does it taste like?<\/li>\n<li>How do you use it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When I lived in Atlanta, there was an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140805123117\/http:\/\/www.dekalbfarmersmarket.com\/ydfmtour.htm\">indoor farmer\u2019s market<\/a> that was an adventurous produce-lover\u2019s dream.\u00a0 They had several loooong aisles of produce \u2013 jackfruit, durian, dragon fruit, bitter melon, and all-variety of exotic beans, squash, root vegetables, cabbages and greens\u2026\u00a0 I asked my questions a lot!<\/p>\n<h3>But, back to the fennel\u2026What is it?<\/h3>\n<p><em>Fennel<\/em>\u00a0is a bulbous vegetable related to parsley, carrots, dill and coriander that has tall stalks and wispy fronds that look like those on its cousin dill. Eating a cup of fennel will give you almost 20% of your recommend daily vitamin C and 10% of your daily fiber and potassium.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-779\" src=\"http:\/\/www.stormysweitzer.com\/recipes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/FennelTomatoSoupB-11182011.png\" alt=\"FennelTomatoSoupB 11182011\" width=\"579\" height=\"434\" allowed\u2026 What does it taste like?<\/h3>\n<p>The fennel plant is anything but dim in flavor.\u00a0 Its bright, fresh flavor will play on your tongue and complement rich foods like pork in wonderful ways. \u00a0In fact, cooking it with a pork roast is how I got hooked on fennel last year.<\/p>\n<p>Fennel tastes slightly of anise, the flavor you find in black licorice, and is often labeled as anise at the grocery store. \u00a0But, anise it is not. \u00a0Fennel is crunchy, with the texture of celery, and slightly \u2013 but not overwhelmingly \u2013 sweet.\u00a0 You\u2019ll get the best flavor, the sooner you eat it.\u00a0 Try to use it within a day or two of buying it.<\/p>\n<h3>How do you use fennel?<\/h3>\n<p>The entire plant is edible, and can be used in a number of ways.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use fronds and stalks in salads<\/li>\n<li>Use fronds to garnish soup or blend into a puree<\/li>\n<li>Slice the bulb and use it fresh on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.101cookbooks.com\/archives\/shaved-fennel-salad-recipe.html\" target=\"_blank\">salads<\/a> or cut it into \u00bd inch rounds and sautee it<\/li>\n<li>Quarter and roast the bulb with meat or other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taste.com.au\/recipes\/12018\/roasted+root+vegetables+with+fennel+garlic+thyme\">root vegetables<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Puree and use the bulb to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epicurious.com\/recipes\/food\/views\/Pork-Tenderloin-with-Fennel-101\" target=\"_blank\">stuff or coat pork<\/a><\/li>\n<li>It also tastes delicious in soup, like in the tomato Devein them and remove their tails if that hasn\u2019t been done yet. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes to allow flavors to blend.\r<\/li>\n\t\t\n\t\t            <li>Using a fine-gauge strainer or colander, strain the soup into a large mixing bowl to remove all fennel fibers. Use the back of a spoon to push the fibers against the strainer and squeeze out all of the liquid.\r<\/li>\n\t\t\n\t\t            <li>Pour the soup back into the soup pot.
